NEC 220 standard-method dwelling load calc, worked

Standard method, 2,000 ft² dwelling: general lighting 2,000 × 3 VA = 6,000 VA; two small-appliance circuits 3,000 VA; laundry 1,500 VA → 10,500 VA gross.

Apply Table 220.45 demand: first 3,000 VA at 100% + remaining 7,500 at 35% = 5,625 VA. Add a 12 kW range at its Column C demand (8,000 VA) and a 5.5 kVA dryer (5,500 VA, above the 5,000 floor).

Total 19,125 VA ÷ 240 V ≈ 80 A calculated load — why a 100 A service is the floor for a modest all-gas-cooking-excepted dwelling, and 200 A is standard once EV charging or electrification enters.
